 Strike: We have solved 80% of ASUU’s demands, FG faults union action SAMBLOG  Aug 29 As Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Monday, further extended it’s over six months old strike,the federal government has faulted the action of the university lecturers’union. Government said the action was not justified given that it had met 80 percent of the demands of the union. The umbrella union of lecturers of the nation’s public universities, had earlier on Monday, again,extended the strike, after accusing the federal government of failure to live up to its term in the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement it signed with it. The action of ASUU came after its National Executive Council,NEC meeting which took place at its University of Abuja Secretariat.  ASUU Extends Six-Month-Old Strike Indefinitely SAMBLOG  Aug 29 The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday extended its six-month-old strike indefinitely until the Federal Government meets its demands. A member of the union, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the development to Channels Television following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the striking varsity teachers at the University of Abuja. He said the union extended the industrial action after reviewing progress reports on ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government in the last four weeks when ASUU rolled over the strike. Last week, the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu said the Federal Government had addressed most of the union’s demands including the release of N50b for the payment of earned allowances for academic and non-academic and non-academic staff of universities.  Strike: Anxiety as ASUU NEC meeting begins SAMBLOG  Aug 28 The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities will commence its meeting by 4pm Today, The PUNCH reports. The NEC is the highest decision-making body of ASUU. The outcome of the NEC meeting will determine whether ASUU will call off its strike which began on Monday, February 14, 2022. “The meeting will start by 4pm,” a member of the NEC confirmed this to our correspondent on Sunday. DAILY POST reports that several media platforms were on Friday flooded with reactions to purported assertion by the ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke that state universities are quack and should not be taken seriously.  BREAKING: NAAT suspends strike for 3 month  SAMBLOG  Aug 25 The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has suspended its nationwide strike for three months. This action follows the earlier suspension of strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of University and Allied Institutions NASU. National President of NAAT, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, made this known while addressing newsmen after the National Executive Council meeting of the union in Abuja on Thursday.  Strike: FG approves additional #100bn to varsities, set to proscribe ASUU if… SAMBLOG  Aug 22 Indications emerged yesterday that the Federal Government may consider the option of proscribing the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU if it fails to call off the prolonged strike after an offer was made to it. The Federal Government has also approved an additional N100 billion for the university sector as part of the understanding in the re-negotiation of the 2009 Agreement. Besides, N50 billion was equally approved to be shared by the university-based unions as earned allowances. The four university-based unions that have been agitating for the payment of earned allowances are ASUU, which calls its own Earned Academic Allowances, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Union of Education and Associated Institutions, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT. This is in addition to N2.5 trillion intervention from TETFund (two per cent profit tax of companies operating in Nigeria) and N554 billion from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), he said.   ASUU must compensate students for wasted time – Minister SAMBLOG  Aug 18 The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Thursday, said it is the responsibility of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to compensate students for the time wasted during the six-month strike, not the Federal Government. He also said the government will not concede to the union’s demand to pay lecturers their emoluments for the six months of no academic activities. Adamu suggested that the affected students should “take ASUU to court” to claim damages incurred over the strike period. The Education minister said this at the 47th Session of the State House Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. According to him, the federal government bears no liability to compensate millions of students grounded for six months over lost time. He also said if the students are determined to get compensated, they should take ASUU to court.

The committee is made up of senior officials of the union. This is as our correspondent learnt that zonal meetings will commence by the end of the week after which branches would go ahead with congresses. The union's National Chairman, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, stated this on Wednesday morning in a telephone conversation with SaharaReporters. It had been reported widely that the Tuesday’s meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government again ended without an agreement.
