Strike: Buhari to decide on ASUU UTAS this week SAMBLOG  Jun 27 President Muhammadu Buhari will soon take a decision on the controversial University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) and the condition of service for varsity teachers, Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige hinted yesterday. To guide the President in taking a decision, the inter-ministerial departments and agencies committees of the Federal Government will turn in their reports on Wednesday. The reports of the committees could bring an end to the four-month old strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).  Ngige dropped the hint in a statement yesterday by his ministry’s spokesman Olajide Oshundun. The striking lectures are at war over which payment platform to be adopted in public varsities between the government-approved Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and ASUU-preferred UTAS. ASUU proffers solution to ongoing strike

ASUU proffers solution to ongoing strike SAMBLOG  Jun 25 The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has observed that resolving its ongoing strike action could be done by the adoption of the transparent payment platform, University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS). Dr Socrates Ebo, Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State chapter, in a statement, lamented that the deep-rooted penchant for corruption within government ethos is all out to frustrate its deployment, saying that UTAS has been proven to be a flawless payment platform. According to him, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), has been decisively proven to be a porous, easily compromised payment platform. The chairperson opined that the IPPIS has been ineffective in curtailing waste of resources, stressing that on the contrary it has been used to pad payrolls and used to effect all manner of fraudulent deductions from workers’ salaries. He expla...

STRIKE: ASUU CONSIDERS COMPROMISE, AS NEGOTIATION CONTINUES SAMBLOG  Jun 6 With about 72 hours to the time limit the Federal Government gave the Prof. Nimi Briggs Committee to conclude negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, there are indications that the union may make some concessions in its demands from the government. Checks by Vanguard, yesterday, showed that this followed the progress being made in the meetings between the committee and the leadership of the union. Though the concessions may not include overlooking the demands that have financial implications, the union could give more time to the government to meet some demands. A source told our correspondent that both parties still met on Saturday, as the deadline given the Briggs Committee to conclude its assignment would lapse mid week. He said: “Demands that have financial implications such as the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, Revitalisation Fund, the payment of withheld salaries a...
