  FG lauds ASUP for suspending strike, tells ASUU to emulate same SAMBLOG May 31 The Federal Government yesterday, lauded the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) for suspending its warning strike and resuming academic activities . The Government also commended the union for acknowledging the efforts of the Federal Government towards the resolution of the challenges facing polytechnic education in the country. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige in a statement issued in Abuja by Olajide Oshundun, Head, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, said it was heartwarming that the polytechnic lecturers acknowledged the unrelenting efforts of the Government towards repositioning higher education in the country.   Strike: We’ve resumed talks with FG, say ASUU, SSANU SAMBLOG  May 30 The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have said the Prof Nimi Briggs Committee is in negotiation with the unions. Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, the ASUU’s National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union had been negotiating with the Briggs Committee since last week over its demands. ASUU commenced its ongoing strike on February 14, 2022 after the Federal Government failed to meet some of its demands namely; the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution payment platform.   NASU, SSANU extends strike by one month SAMBLOG  May 27 The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities NASU have extended the strike embarked upon by the unions under the eagis of joint action committee, JAC by one month. This was disclosed by the leadership of both unions of the university of Benin chapter this Friday. They said despite their strike for the past two months ,government has not met any of their seven demands and vowed to resist any form of intimidation to cajole them to go back to work when issues that led to the industrial action have not been addressed. The institution’s vice chancellor professor Lillian Salami was also on ground in solidarity with them. The non Academic staff of government owned universities have been on strike since March 28 2022.

Despite the order given by the union, ASUU that students should remain at home. Sources told us at TEAM PLATO that students at few departments were seen receiving lectures.   We are working round the clock to end strike, says FG SAMBLOG  May 24 The Federal Government Tuesday said it would spend about N34 billion on the ongoing payment of minimum wage consequential adjustments to education sector workers with effect from 2019. The beneficiaries include members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and their counterparts in the polytechnics and Colleges of Education. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige disclosed this while responding to questions from labour correspondents in Abuja on the prolonged ASUU strike. According to Ngige, the universities would get N23.5 billion the polytechnics N6 billion and the Colleges of Education N4 billion, totalling about N34 billion.   Nigerian students cry out as ASUU strike enters 100 days, some universities mull pull out SAMBLOG  May 24 Nigerian students have lamented the ongoing industrial action embarked by their lecturers under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that reached 100 days today. ASUU on February 14, 2022 issued a month warning strike which was extendend by eight weeks and at its expiration on May 9, another twelve weeks was added claiming that the government refused to accede to its demands. According to the union, the major demand is the implementation of 2009 agreement, some other demands are Earned Academic Allowances, renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) among others. Our correspondent gathered that the union may decide to call off its ongoing strike, depending on the outcome of the meeting.   FG moves to end ASUU, poly lecturers strikes, begins arrears payment SAMBLOG REPORTS  May 20 The Federal Government has commenced the payment of minimum wage arrears, which it owed lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and Academic Staff Union of Universities as part of efforts to end ongoing strikes by the unions, Team Plato has learnt. The National President of ASUP, Dr. Anderson Ezeibe, and the Chairman, ASUU FUTMinna, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed this in separate interviews with our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday. Team Plato reported that the two unions are currently on strike following the inability of the government to meet their demands including the payment of minimum wage arrears and release of revitalisation funds, among others. The students’ body made the appeal in a statement signed by the Chairman of Ogun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Comrade Damilola Simeon, and made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday. The students had gone out for a second-day protest in the state over the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. Videos obtained by our correspondent had shown soldiers marching in their numbers with their guns, alongside a van being driven after them. Sporadic gunshots were heard as they moved while some of the students ran in panic.
